Congratulations to Kidsfirst Linwood - Whānau certificate winner, recognised in the At Our Heart 2016 Awards, presented at the AGM in May.

Our values are very important to us as an association and we're so proud to be able to celebrate them in this way.

Whānau is all about people. It's about making and maintaining connections - because at the core, that's what we're all about.

Education Service Manager, Gae Thawley describes what Whānau means to Kidsfirst Linwood, "The team at Linwood kindergarten have embraced bicultural development in their setting. This work has strengthened the partnership and learning of all in this community. Over to the past two years they have worked closely with their Māori Advisor, Bicultural Adviser and whānau to bring place based education into the kindergartens communities’ awareness and ways of being."

"Working in partnership with whānau is integral to the success of this work. Whānau have become more involved over time as the teaching team have constantly sought out and included whānau on this journey of connection with place, Māori concepts, and ways of being. Teachers have been courageous stepping out of their comfort zones often to share ideas, learn waiata, pakiwaitara, and appropriate Tikanga to support this work," she adds.

"Particular examples of the strong relationships with whānau include a very successful and moving Marae experience at Rapaki and all the preparation work that went into this experience, Māori Whānau sharing with humility and honesty where they are at on their learning about their own culture, whānau learning marae protocol and about the history of place, and a family inspired by this learning travelled to Aoraki and sent back a video of their child singing the waiata they had learnt at kindergarten with Aoraki in the background."

"This work endures at Linwood kindergarten as the team continue to be courageous and focus on whakawhanaungatanga and Ako."

Although we celebrate these values each year with awards and certificates, we know that people see the behaviours and commitment associated with our values every day, in so many different ways in our wonderful kindergartens. So congratulations and keep doing what you're doing so well.
