SOME OTHER STORIES...
Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst North New Brighton
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch and make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary... and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
There's one very special person who has links to Kidsfirst North New Brighton that go all the way back to her own kindy days.
Yvonne Ponting (pictured here in the navy top) attended the kindergarten many moons ago, and had such a great time, she decided to train as a kindergarten teacher when she grew up.
Even her student teacher days were spent at... you guessed it, Kidsfirst North New Brighton.
Now Yvonne is a permanent teacher there, and is much loved by the children and community - as are her parents, Lyn and John Ponting. Every Christmas Lyn and John faithfully deliver a Christmas Tree to the kindy in their Kombi van, with hokey pokey ice-cream for everyone.
Because of their kindness and long-time links to Kidsfirst North New Brighton, Lyn and John were chosen to be the kindergarten's 'special guests' to arrive in style on Vintage Car Day.
KIDSFIRST KINDERGARTENS ARE A NOT FOR PROFIT ASSOCIATION THAT HAS DEVELOPED AND MAINTAINED KINDERGARTENS IN CHRISTCHURCH, CANTERBURY AND ON THE WEST COAST FOR OVER 100 YEARS - AS THE PLACE LOCAL KIDS COME TO LEARN, PLAY AND HAVE FUN.
As part of the 100 Days of Kidsfirst,
the Canterbury Vintage Car Club put a fleet of vintage cars on the road to visit our kindergartens.
