While many Kidsfirst kindys baked, created, planted and drew to celebrate being 100 Years Young,Kidsfirst Kaiapoi Northdecided to look outside the kindy gates and into the world around them.
To enable children to be able to visualise what 100 actually looks like, the teachers at Kidsfirst Kaiapoi North asked their families to donate 100 cans of food to the kindy to give to the local food bank.
"Our kindergarten is very much part of the wider community, and we are always looking for opportunities for the children to interact with their town," says Head Teacher Jill Chatterton.
"Strengthening links with the 'wider world' helps children extend their knowledge of both familiar and unfamiliar people, places, things and events.
"It is so important for children to build a connection to where they live, to understand the needs of people within that community.
Building empathy and responsibility in children takes many forms, and this is just one way for this to happen."
What a great way to end the year, and fantastic support for the Kaiapoi community. Well done Kidsfirst Kaiapoi North!
