A newcomer kindy.
Kendal Ave Kindergarten originally opened as Waimairi Kindergarten on the 11th of October 1949. It wasn't until the 6th of June 1961 that it became Kendal Ave.
The above image is of a reading session at Waimairi Kindergarten in the early days and below are two excerpts from the Christchurch Kindergarten Chronicle that tells about Waimairi's history.
"Waimairi has become much more civilised with a new fence enclosing the grounds, new swings, a shed and a jungle gym. Soon we shall look and feel like one of the well established kindergartens instead of a newcomer!"
As we celebrate our Association being 100 years young, read below about how Kendal Ave celebrated many years ago for the Centennial.
"Our slide was greatly in demand during the Centennial festivities - used on both the Kaiapoi and Christchurch Kindergarten floats to give the general public the right idea of what a slide should be!"
Our website uses material from the Canterbury Westland Kindergarten Association's own archives, Kindergarten Chronicles and other CWFKA publications, and those sourced from the kindys themselves. Unless otherwise noted, we believe all photographs are those of the kindergarten association and sincerely apologise if we have used any images inadvertently, without appropriate credits or permissions. If so, please advise us so we can rectify the situation.
