SOME OTHER STORIES...
Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst Hornby
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch, make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary...and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
Kidsfirst Hornby experienced a bit of a time warp when their visitor stepped out of the vintage car last week....
Lo and behold, it was their previous head teacher, Barbara Allred!
Barbara taught at Kidsfirst Hornby for 30 years, and only just retired in April. Judging by the smiles on those faces, both the children and staff recognised her and welcomed her back as an old friend.
The children all lined up to cheer her in, and she got many photos with them as they all posed with the cars. After seeing what games the different children were playing, and commenting on their artwork, she sat them down to read them one of their favourite stories, ‘The Thing with No Ears’.
As a gift, to say thank you for being chosen as their special person, Barbara presented the kindergarten with two new puzzles.
The teachers commented on how “special and exciting” the day was, especially for the children that remembered Barbara. What a lovely way to celebrate!
