SOME OTHER STORIES...
A lasting thank you...
At Kidsfirst Bromley, they go to great lengths to show their community how much they appreciate their support.
Each major project that receives community help – which is almost all of them – is carefully documented, benefactors are invited along to grand openings and morning teas, and plaques are placed on the equipment or area as a lasting thank you.
Head Teacher Blanche Head says the community is a hugely important part of the kindergarten.
“Their help and support makes such a huge difference, we wouldn’t have been able to do so many things without it. Their support and encouragement also shows they value what we do. In return, we make sure we value them, include them and make them a part of what’s happening, so they have a stake in the kindy. We appreciate what they do, and putting up the plaques is a great way of acknowledging that forever.”
Blanche and the team work hard to foster relationships with people and groups in the community, connecting with former local councillor David Close and the likes of Rotary, links that have proved invaluable in getting things done – like the extension of the kindy’s office, and a new storage shed.
And the significance of these connections goes much further than monetary support – for both parties.
“Often kindy is one of the first community links children have, and also their families and whanau when they come to an area. Through their involvement with kindy, families gain personal strength and growth and get ready to go on to other things, like Boards of Trustees,” Blanch says.
“And for the children, having family and community involvement helps them to have a sense of belonging and ownership, they know it’s somewhere they, and their family, belong. That helps build self-esteem, belonging is a key and basic part of self-esteem.
“I’ve been working here 20 years, and feel really proud to be part of this community, and we want children to have that as well.”

Kidsfirst Bromley know its important to recognise the generous help from their community.
Grand openings, morning teas and plaques are all part of showing the kindy's appreciation for some of their donated projects.
