You’ll find our kindergarten tucked away in a quiet street in the heart of the Edgeware village in St Albans - just look for the beautiful trees and our flags.  We've been your local kindergarten for more than 100 years!  Tamariki here have freedom to explore, connect with other children and learn through play.  All around you will see children busy at work alongside each other, making choices for play that engage them with the people, the places and the things of our environment and community.

Kidsfirst Kindergartens Sunbeam is a well-resourced kindergarten with a spacious, welcoming, and attractive and child-centred environment for children aged 2 – 5 years.  Inside we provide lots of opportunities to try new things, inspire curiosity and develop creativity through play. We work to provide an atmosphere full of fun in a beautiful and natural environment that gives our children independence and sense of belonging.

Our beautiful, big backyard has lots of room for children to be challenged, to explore and to develop their physical skills, with a variety of moveable equipment that allows children to set their own challenges. Green grass,  gardens, areas to experience physical challenges such as climbing trees, and equipment specially designed to support children’s physical growth and development are features, and our big trees provide shelter outside in all weather.

The qualified and experienced teaching team at Kidsfirst Sunbeam ignite an excitement for learning in children by recognising and responding to a child’s individual interests. Play is essential to learning and development in our tamariki, and our programme is based on exploration, inquiry, creativity and nature-based education. We believe in uninterrupted time and space to grow and learn – our children and whānau are heard, and time to learn is unhurried. We see knowledge as a process, a discovery and building of understanding.

You're always welcome here! Relationships with parents, family and whānau at Sunbeam are based on trust, respect, and open communication.  Kanohi ki te kanohi (face to face conversations) are valued immensely and help us to support your child's learning journey. We love it when whānau come in to share their skills, knowledge, language and culture - enriching our programme.

You’ll often see us out and about in our community, using the opportunity to help our tamariki make connections to the wider community, and supporting them to make sense of their place in it.  We even have a sister-city relationship with Asahi Kindergarten in Kurashiki!  We have strong links with our local primary schools, which supports the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from Kindergarten.

We would recommend that you enrol initially for at least two full days – building up to five days at your child's pace.  This gives our teachers time to get to know your child and gives consistency around supporting their learning.

Nau mai, tauti mai - come in any time – we’ll show you around and make you welcome!
