An addition to the community.
Vickery Street Kindergarten opened in the latter part of the 1970s.
By then, kindergarten was very different to the "kindy" format that was established all those years earlier. Free play had replaced the very structured timetable, with its compulsory rest times, and the teachers embraced a more relaxed atmosphere and working relationship.
The kindergarten is remembered fondly from that time, as being a great addition to the community. Above is a picture of the kindy hangi in 1988.
Below is a snap from 1989 and a group of girls in the playground tyre in 1993.
Our environment has always been very important to us and the sandpit has been a central focus of the kindergarten and the place of a lot of activity over the years.
Our website uses material from the Canterbury Westland Kindergarten Association's own archives, Kindergarten Chronicles and other CWFKA publications, and those sourced from the kindys themselves. Unless otherwise noted, we believe all photographs are those of the kindergarten association and sincerely apologise if we have used any images inadvertently, without appropriate credits or permissions. If so, please advise us so we can rectify the situation.
