Still loving it, every day...
“It’s a job I just love - children's learning is just so exciting. I still feel just as passionate about the teaching and learning, if not more so, than when I first started teaching here 23 years ago. I love working in this community. Now I am at the exciting stage of teaching the children of some of the children I have previously taught - it is special to be able to make these connections again - community, a sense of belonging and relationships really are what our kindergarten community is all about.
“It is said that 'Change is Constant' and that has certainly been the case in kindergarten over the years, as in other sectors of education - with change comes new opportunities, improvements, different ways of doing things and sometimes a few challenges along the way.
“In the early days, little brown donation envelopes were in, each with the name of the child and the suggested donation amount carefully written - I think 55 cents per session was the suggested donation. The teachers counted and recorded the money each Friday afternoon before the committee treasurer came in to bank it - yes those were the days of kindergarten committees, monthly committee meetings, and Wednesday and Friday afternoon non-contact times for the teachers.
“Kindergarten today has so many strengths - changing from sessional to the kindergarten day model, better ratios, and a more professional approach to kindergarten teaching. There’s also our organisation's commitment to professionalism and to 100% qualified fully trained teachers, professional development opportunities for teachers and on-going professional support from head office.
“And so many good things about kindergarten have stayed the same. Like the community focus, kindergarten is at the heart of communities it serves - here at Hillmorton there has been a kindergarten in this community for nearly 70 years. Over that time, we’ve held our commitment to the kindergarten philosophy, relationships and our partnership with parents, whanau, family and caregivers and children. Teaching and learning has always been at the heart of what Kidsfirst do well.
At Kidsfirst, we always keep our focus on the children.
“Yes, after 23 years here at Kidsfirst Hillmorton I can still say - I love my job. I feel fortunate to be part of the Kidsfirst family, and to be a teacher working for a very professional organisation and a leading provider of early childhood education. Children's learning still continues to excite me and I just love working with the children and families here.”
