SOME OTHER STORIES...
West Coast playhouse - a community project
When the teaching team at Kidsfirst Karoro set out to make the kindy’s playground better reflect the local environment, little did they know quite how successful they’d be.
At a parent BBQ, the team outlined their dreams and aspirations for the kindergarten, including their wish for a playhouse in the form of a settler-style cottage.
One of the families answered the call with a playhouse that would fit the bill perfectly, and so ensued a true Coast can-do tale in getting the building to the kindergarten.
A helicopter was used to get the structure off its hillside home, and the journey continued on the back of a trailer to its new spot at the kindy.
“It was made to go here,” says Head Teacher Alison Huddle, “It’s already looking like a little West Coast settler’s cottage, and we’re in the process of landscaping. It just shows how the community stand beside us and get things done. We had a bit of a dilemma about how to get the heavy building off the trailer, it was 7pm, pouring rain, but people came to help and made it happen. We still can’t believe we have it, we’re thrilled. The children just love it.”
“The outdoor environment here is looking really good, thanks to the amazing support and energy of our families and community. As I’m talking to you now, I can see flowering flaxes with a Tui and a Bellbird – what a West Coast story!”
