How GREEN can you get?
Kidsfirst Lincoln is not just green, they're greener than all the rest - becoming the first early childhood centre in the country to receive a prestigious environmental certificate.
A group of children and staff from the kindergarten attended the celebration ceremony, where children sung its 'Care Code' song to the many councillors, community and other schools receiving awards.
Teacher Joyce McHerron spoke, sharing with the audience the work they have done since receiving the Green Gold Award in 2009.
It was fitting that Councillor Lindsay Philps presented the certificate, after being involved in many of the kindergarten’s projects over the years as a local parent and landscaper who helped build and create the lovely outdoor environment.
Head Teacher Jeanne Williams says to achieve the certificate the team had to reflect on the ways the kindy group constantly work towards better outcomes for the environment in terms of the kindergarten itself, their community, nationally and the bigger global picture.
“The reflection certificate is an acknowledgement that we have surpassed our Green Gold visions and continue to move forward in our sustainable practices and continue to set ourselves new goals. We had to look at how our learning enables us all to have a deep understanding of sustainability locally, nationally and globally, and how children and adults at our kindergarten collaborate to make decisions and changes that have a significant effect in terms of sustainability."
The kindergarten also had to reflect on how it builds knowledge, competencies and confidence to innovate and act to create a sustainable future, how it is creating changes in thinking and behaviour, its interaction with, and value of different cultures, along with genuine and mutually supportive relationships with tangata whenua. Lastly, that they all feel a deep connection with the earth: "Ko au ko koe, ko koe ko au."
“So as you can imagine this is a huge statement to say that we achieved every single bit of it,” Jeanne says, “But for each of these aspects, we can reflect on how we are working towards achieving them, and how this is an on-going and committed journey for this kindergarten and its community.”
