Kidsfirst Hokitika is lucky to have the wonderful Prestons Reserve right on its doorstep...
OUR TOP STORIES:
At Kidsfirst we embrace getting outdoors and learning hands-on about nature.
The teachers, whānau and tamariki at Kidsfirst Hokitika know how lucky they are to live on the beautiful West Coast, with the amazing Prestons Bush Reserve just a short walk from their kindergarten. They visit most weeks, decked out in their high-vis vests for safety.
“The tamariki spend lots of time climbing trees and discovering insects in the bush, along with exploring the many tracks,” says Head Teacher Ceridwyn Dimmick.
The children trail through the bush, one by one, holding back the branches for each other as they go. Sometimes they practice being tidy-kiwi’s by taking any rubbish they find back to the kindergarten for disposal.
“It helps the children to be aware of caring for their environment and reinforces that picking up rubbish and keeping our place clean and healthy, is an important part of belonging to our community,” says Ceridwyn.
There’s something different to discover every time. Recently, a HUGE tree had been chopped down, it was so big all of the children could sit along the stump. That same day was a hot walk back to the kindergarten so the lucky children were treated to a delicious ice-cream to cool down.
“Ice-creams are such a special treat and even more special is when it is a surprise,” says Ceridwyn.
What a wonderful adventure while having fun with friends!
