SOME OTHER STORIES...
Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst Hawthornden
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch, make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary...and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
Kidsfirst Hawthornden chose to invite Lynda Boyd as their special guest for Vintage Car Day.
Lynda is the Head of Early Childhood at the University of Canterbury College of Education, and has for many years been in charge of training early childhood teachers across the city. She was also instrumental in Hawthornden’s history; she fundraised extensively to bring the dreams of having a kindergarten in Avonhead Park to life, and served as the Establishment Committee President from Kidsfirst Hawthornden’s first day, the 9th of February 1991. It was only fitting that she should join them for their centenary celebrations.
The children made a sign to welcome Lynda, and when she arrived she talked to the staff and children, reminiscing with those who could remember about the opening day 22 years ago. She looked at some of the old photos from the opening of the kindergarten and even found herself in some of them!. The children were so interested in the vintage cars, they made vintage car puppets out of paper and straw to play with.
The staff thought that the Vintage Car Day was a wonderful way to link the past with the future, and wouldn’t have wanted to celebrate it with anyone but Lynda.
