A new generation of kindergarten.
Hawthornden Kindergarten opened on the 9th of February 1991 and in doing so, opened alongside a new generation of kindergarten practice.
Kidsfirst Hawthornden sums up the spirit of a new generation of kindergartens that were established in the 1990s, where the
practices of the 1920s and 30s had given way to a more thorough understanding of the role and expectation of early childhood education in the face of a newer generation of parents and their children.
In kindys like this, learning and having fun are fostered side by side with a holistic understanding of the needs for a robust curriculum, community involvement and practical teaching strategies for preschool children.
The needs and commitments of our children and their whānau have changed over the years and our newer kindergartens, like Kidsfirst Hawthornden, reflect that while the relationship families have with kindergarten may have changed, Kidsfirst is still and will remain to be a focal point of many of our communities, as well as an outstanding provider of quality early childhood education.
Our website uses material from the Canterbury Westland Kindergarten Association's own archives, Kindergarten Chronicles and other CWFKA publications, and those sourced from the kindys themselves.
