You'll find our kindergarten right next to a beautiful park in the heart of a quiet, family-friendly community. We’ve been teaching and learning with local children since 1955! Behind our gate you will hear and see engaged children aged 2 – 5 years enjoying our large and leafy outdoor space. Tamariki here have freedom to explore, connect with other children and learn through play. Visitors often comment on the calm, relaxed yet busy environment they see as they come into the kindergarten. All around you will see children busy at work alongside each other, making choices for play that engage them with the people, the places and the things of our environment and community.
In the words of our Tamariki:
“We learn to be kind, to make friends, to make things. There's lots of places to play, we love going to the park and collecting chestnuts and watching cicadas.”
“It’s Our Place” “We love Kindy!"
Our programme is child-led, where kaiako/ teachers work alongside the tamariki, supporting them to become independent learners. Teachers use rich language to provoke and inspire children to develop their problem solving skills, and engage within their learning environment. Children are seen as risk takers and strategic thinkers, confident and capable. Children at Kidsfirst Kindergartens Pitcairn Crescent can be seen working with and alongside others in the spirit of Manaakitanga (care & respect for one another), promoting relationships that are positive and reciprocal – kindy friends are friends for life!
Our sun-filled indoor environment is open and well-resourced. Children can create, explore and experiment together while also finding quiet places to work, play and learn – in groups or independently. Our large sheltered deck provides for indoor/ outdoor flow in all kinds of weather.
An exciting environment exists in our outside spaces. Green grass, barked areas, gardens, areas to experience physical challenges such as climbing trees, and equipment specially designed to support children’s physical growth and development are features. Tamariki choose from and learn to use a range of real resources such as saws, hammers, nails, gardening equipment, spades and shovels. In using this equipment, they learn about managing risk and making safe choices for meaningful play.
We have a strong focus on connecting with the natural world, developing sustainable practices and learning how we can care for the environment (Kaitiakitanga). Tamariki enjoy gardening, appreciating flowers, fruit & vegetables that they grow and share. Our neighbouring park provides us with a big space to explore and develop our physical skills as well as furthering our appreciation & knowledge of Mother Nature as we observe the wildlife the gardens attract.
We have an ‘open door’ approach - whānau are welcome to stay at any time. The notion of community and connectedness is important here, it’s at the heart of what we do. We value the relationships we build with our whānau/families, and look forward to making new connections. The diverse language, culture and identity of our families is highly respected and valued - whānau/ families are viewed as significant partners, and are included in our early learning journey. Whānau and community are encouraged to be involved at our kindergarten in whatever way suits – through a helpful hand now and then, or by just joining us for a part of our day.
You’ll often see us out and about in our community, using the opportunity to help our tamariki make connections to and feel a part of life in the wider community, and supporting them to make sense of their place in it. We have strong links with our local primary schools, which supports the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from Kindergarten.
Kidsfirst Kindergartens Pitcairn Crescent operates for six hours each day, from 8.45am – 2.45pm. This works really well if you have older children going to school as you can do the drop offs and pick-ups at the same time. We would recommend that you enrol for at least two full days –building up to five days. This gives us, the teachers time to get to know your child and provides consistency around supporting their learning.
Come in any time, we are very proud of our unique learning environment and would love to show you around. Kidsfirst Kindergartens Pitcairn crescent is a wonderful place to learn!
