Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.

You’ll find our newly-renovated kindergarten in the heart of the culturally diverse community of Hornby, in the west of Christchurch. We celebrate the diverse cultures that come to "Our Place" – when you come here you will see and feel the very special community that is Hornby reflected in what we do every day.
Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hornby is a well-resourced kindergarten with a spacious, welcoming, and attractive and child-centred environment for children aged 2 – 5 years. Our indoor space provides lots of opportunities to try new things, inspire curiosity and develop creativity through play. We work to provide an atmosphere full of fun in an environment that gives our children independence and sense of belonging. We have a strong language and literacy programme we encourage our tamariki to develop a love of books and storytelling.
Our outside area has lots of room for children to be challenged, to explore and to develop their physical skills, with a variety of moveable equipment that allows children to set their own challenges. Green grass, barked areas, gardens, areas to experience physical challenges such as climbing trees, and equipment specially designed to support children’s physical growth and development are features. Tamariki choose from and learn to use a range of real resources such as saws, hammers, nails, gardening equipment, spades and shovels. In using this equipment, they learn about managing risk and making safe choices for meaningful play. We have large gardens where we teach our children to look after our environment by being involved in planting and caring for the gardens.
Our skilled and experienced teaching team passionately support children’s learning, their interests, skills and abilities. We acknowledge and value every person in this place as a teacher and learner. This supports the tikanga principle of ako: that the educator is also learning from the child, that the learner and whānau cannot be separated.
We are very proud of the welcoming, supportive environment that we offer and that you, our whānau, will become a part of. Your family will soon develop a strong sense of belonging here at Kidsfirst Hornby. We start each day with a welcome mat time where all tamariki and their whānau are welcomed, and any visitors and events for the day are shared. Lots of our whānau stay to enjoy this special start to the day.
Our kindergarten has developed strong links within our local community – you’ll often see us out and about exploring our community and helping the children to make sense of their place in it. We are visited by a HIPPY co-ordinator, supporting early literacy in homes, The CCC library, Heartland Community Services, and we are well supported by local businesses in our fundraising.
We are located close to South Hornby Primary school and we make regular visits to South Hornby School with our four-year-old tamariki, helping to support the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from kindergarten. Our kindergarten is involved in the Community of Learners in Hornby, building relationships with other schools and early learning centres to better provide the foundations for life-long learning for your child.
Our kindergarten operates for six hours each day, from 8.30am – 2.30pm. This works really well if you have older children going to school as you can do the drop offs and pick-ups at the same time.
We would recommend that you enrol for at least two full days – building up to five days. This gives our teachers time to get to know your child and gives some consistency around supporting their learning. It’s hard for our teachers to do this with just a few hours here and there.
Come in any time – we’ll show you around and make you welcome!
