Our Professional Leaders are an important member of our teaching team.  Based at Kidsfirst Head Office, they are on-site regularly to observe our programme, give us feedback and professional support, and encourage us toward continuous educational improvement. Please feel free to talk with them about your child’s kindergarten/centre experience...

You can read more here about what's been happening in our archive of stories about Kidsfirst Kindergartens, the fun we have, the processes and learning outcomes that result and why we're such a great start for your child.

You will find our kindergarten tucked down a long driveway right next to Rowley Primary School, in the heart of our unique neighbourhood. Our skilled and experienced teaching team is proud to provide a programme for children aged 2 – 5 years where we foster a strong sense of belonging. We do this by encouraging children to show Manaakitanga- caring for each other, and Kaitiakitanga, caring for our environment. We encourage our children to be self-directing, creating their own challenges and being supported to achieve these. We have a strong Pasifika presence at our kindergarten, supported through language and culture woven into our programme every day.

We support every child’s learning, their interests, skills and abilities, acknowledging and valuing every person in this place as a teacher and learner.  This supports the tikanga principle of ako: the educator is also learning from the child, and that the learner and whānau cannot be separated.

Inside at Kidsfirst Hoon Hay there is an open, expansive and inspiring learning environment which enhances and encourages collaborative ways of working for our learners. Children at Kidsfirst Hoon Hay are able to participate in challenging and physically active play, along with an array of creative and sensory experiences. Tamariki here have freedom to explore, connect with other children and learn through play.  Visitors often comment on the calm, relaxed yet busy environment they see as they come into the kindergarten.  All around you will see children at work alongside each other, making choices for play that engage them with the people, the places and the things of our environment and community.  We offer an inclusive programme that encourages risk-taking and supports the emergent interests of our tamariki.

Our beautifully designed big back yard offers adventure as well as many quiet spaces for the children to play in. We have many mature trees offering natural shade, and many native shrubs and plants. Our edible garden, lovingly tended by our tamariki and whānau, provides an abundance of produce which we use in the kindergarten with the children and share with whānau. Green grass, barked areas, areas to experience physical challenges such as climbing trees, and equipment specially designed to support children’s physical growth and development are features.  Tamariki choose from and learn to use a range of real resources such as saws, hammers, nails, gardening equipment, spades and shovels.  In using this equipment, they learn about managing risk and making safe choices for meaningful play.

We have an ‘open door’ approach - whānau are welcome to stay at any time at Kidsfirst Hoon Hay. The notion of community and connectedness is important here, it’s at the heart of what we do. We value the relationships we build with our whānau/families, and look forward to making new connections, embracing the multiculturalism and diversity of our community.  Our families, past and present, are an important part of our kindergarten life.  We value this greatly and we encourage family/ whānau to visit and take part in their child’s kindergarten day, sharing your skills and culture too.

You’ll often see us out and about in our community, using the opportunity to help our tamariki make connections to and feel a part of life in the wider community, and supporting them to make sense of their place in it. We have strong links with our local primary schools, which supports the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from Kindergarten.

Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hoon Hay is a place where we embrace and celebrate all cultures. Our kindergarten operates for six hours each day, from 8.30am – 2.30pm. This works really well if you have older children going to school as you can do the drop offs and pick-ups at the same time.

We would recommend that you enrol for at least two full days – building up to five days.  This gives our teachers time to get to know your child and gives consistency around supporting their learning.

Come in any time – we’ll show you around and make you welcome!
