SOME OF OUR TOP STORIES
| At Kidsfirst, we work hard to provide quality early childhood services for our local neighbourhoods.
Sadly, following the Canterbury earthquakes our Mount Pleasant Kindergarten building had to be demolished. Planning to build a brand new facility got underway in January 2015 but getting resource consent approval took nearly two years - so we welcomed the good news that we can now go ahead.
Construction on Kidsfirst 'The Bays' Kindergarten, on McCormacks Bay Road Reserve, is due to start late 2017. It will cater to young families in the Redcliffs, Mount Pleasant, Heathcote and Ferrymead areas, with spaces for up to fifty children in peak demand.
The plan is to have an attractive, lightweight, single storey building which maximises use of the Kidsfirst Design Principles, (more on this below). It will have natural, native landscaping and a great playground area and will be a community place that attracts existing and new families, and provides an environment for enhancing learning and teaching.
The physical environment and resources will encourage critical thought, wonderment and inquiry, provide challenges and opportunities for risk-taking, provoke intellectual stimulation, and will strive to be inclusive for all young children, infants and toddlers.
The Kindergarten will operate for 6 hours each day (Monday-Friday), for children aged 2 – 5 years, as a centre of choice for families from the Bays area and will be an early childhood education centre.
The Project Team is in high-spirits following the decision, as this means the end is in sight for the Kidsfirst Mount Pleasant teaching team and families who have been operating out of the local Ascension church hall since 2011.
Some of the ideas we've incorporated into the plans are
These are some of the things that we think will make a world of difference and help to create a wonderful, stimulating learning environment for our tamariki.
The new Kindergarten will follow Kidsfirst Kindergarten's Design Principles with a physical environment which
It is an exciting project for all of us and one that has, at times, had its struggles. However we are so excited about the way forward and what the future holds for the Bays.
