Vintage Car Day, November 2013

at Kidsfirst South Brighton

The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch and make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.

The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary ... and each car carried a “special guest” to the kindy, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.

As a way to help children see what life was like in the 'olden days', the cars came to the kindys. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!

It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.

Children at Kidsfirst South Brighton loved the visit by the vintage cars, because they were allowed to play in them! Everybody was also excited to receive a visit from Alison Kennedy, who arrived as the special guest in the car.

Alison's first child started at Kidsfirst South New Brighton in 1973. She quickly became involved in the committee - and didn't look back. In the ensuing 40 years, Alison enrolled her three other children and two grandchildren, as well as helping other Mums in the community by doing the drop off and pick up for them.

In total, she’s taken 25 children to and from kindy in the last four decades, and says the kindergarten is like a second home.

“Sometimes I felt I ought to have my sleeping bag with me and stayed over,” she jokes.

Alison also supports the kindy with "heaps of her yummy baking", and when they celebrated their 50th anniversary it was Alison who was invited to plant a tree to commemorate the event.

Some of the same teachers that were at Kidsfirst South Brighton when Alison’s children started are still there today, which is testament to what a great place it is.
