How things have changed.

Pitcairn Crescent Kindergarten opened on the 20th of April 1955.

At the time of our centenary celebrations, Kidsfirst Pitcairn Crescent Head Teacher Christine Nicoll, recalled how she started teaching in 1973.

“There are some very big differences in teaching, because we now look at things from a post-modernist view. This view is that a child learns from multiple sources, including family, culture, peers and other wider issues that affect them. Learning doesn’t just come from a teacher. Previously we presumed as a teacher, we had all the knowledge and had to provide activities that the children would learn from."

Christine (seen in the photo above) notices how there's been a big change of thinking in terms of early childhood education, over the years.

“Pre-1996, when Te Whariki was published, the focus was on what children could and could not do. Our job was to provide experiences so the child would learn a skill or task – it seemed very black and white. Learning now is not task focused, but rather dispositional, e.g about persistence and coping with difficulty etc."

“Administration was minimal – now it’s extensive. I had two folders when I started teaching, now looking around my office, I see 40, and a computer with extensive folders. The paper work is very time consuming, yet necessary because of accountability."

“We now have so many more professional development opportunities to further our knowledge, and more research to help us as educators, to better understand how children learn and what we need to do to help them explore opportunities for learning."

“Getting to know children, and working with the child and their family is what it’s all about to me – I really believe in what we are doing, and I believe I’m playing a part in making a difference for children and families."

But even through certain changes, Christine says there are things about Kidsfirst that have been constant over the last 100 years.

“The essence of Kidsfirst has always been about the great importance of early childhood, and providing children with experiences that will facilitate learning. I love being part of watching children learn over time, it’s so exciting."

“The importance of family and whanau has also always been paramount at Kidsfirst. And Kidsfirst’s environments – indoor and outdoor – have always been positive learning spaces, where children have fun, and where they’re encouraged in the joys of discovery.”
