SOME OTHER STORIES...
Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst Parklands
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch and make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary... and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
Barbara Murrell was the first Head Teacher at Kidsfirst Parklands when it opened 34 years ago, so it was exciting to be able to invite her to ride in the vintage car to celebrate the 100 years of Kidsfirst. The cars that came to visit were a Chevrolet (pictured here) and a 1937 Morris 10/4 Series III.
The children loved seeing the cars up close, and Barbara was fascinated seeing the changes that had happened at Kidsfirst Parklands after she had left. She loved the extensions they had made, particularly with the pergola area and the swings. When she started there hadn’t been any fences, which she said made supervision a real challenge.
Barbara exclaimed, “I was really pleased to find that the brown chairs and orange tables that I chose were still there for children to use.” Talk about leaving a lasting legacy!
