Vintage Car Day, November 2013

at Kidsfirst Papanui

The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch, making their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.

The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary...and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.

The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!

It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.

It was a right royal Vintage Car Day at Kidsfirst Papanui, where Head Teacher Margaret Cottrell and her team welcomed their neighbour Eileen (dressed as the Queen, but in traditional Canterbury colours) as their special guest.

"Eileen lives over the road from us, and helped us set up our garden. She collects our mail after the term has finished, and calls us to tell us to go home if we stay after 6pm! She often lets the children borrow things from her house such as baking tins," says Margaret.

Eileen says she's amazed to see how much the kindergarten that she calls "one of the best in Christchurch" has grown since she has lived in Papanui.

Kidsfirst Papanui felt very fortunate that Eileen was able to be part of the Vintage Car Day - she was heading into hospital the next day to have surgery on her hip, but wanted to make sure she could come to the celebration with the children beforehand. Of the car, she remarked, “it was lovely to ride in but very hard to get into – the driver helped me, of course!”

Here are some photos of that special day at Kidsfirst Papanui:
