We've always been into the outdoors.

When Mathers Road Kindergarten opened on the 9th of November 1977, our Association was growing steadily throughout Canterbury and Westland.

With the opening of Mathers Road and Ngaire Larcombe, the number of kindergartens in the Association has risen to forty-eight.

Annual Report 1977.

With the excitement of expansion into new communities, there also came an increased focus amongst our Association on the value of outdoor environments.

"A greater emphasis was placed on the outdoor area as an exciting place for learning. Much interest was evident in planting trees and shrubs to make this an exciting and beautiful place to play. Within programmes there was, along with provision of activities, a continuing recognition and strengthening of the elements which made for a good pre-school - friends, space and freedom, equipment, materials, first hand experiences, and people to supervise and take an interest in the children and to share their enthusiasm."

 1980 Annual Report.

These photos show Mathers Rd Kindergarten's outdoor area as it has developed over the past forty years. Many things have stayed the same - there is still that real kiwi sense of playing on the grass, losing yourself in the sandpit, or exploring around a favourite tree.

But some things have changed as well. Now more than ever, kindy kids are found gaining confidence on jungle gyms and balancing on beams. Challenging themselves and helping others as they tackle the tasks new equipment can give them.

But those natural spaces where learning and development flourish best are still a key part of our Association's beliefs.

Our website uses material from the Canterbury Westland Kindergarten Association's own archives, Kindergarten Chronicles and other CWFKA publications, and those sourced from the kindys themselves. Unless otherwise noted, we believe all photographs are those of the kindergarten association and sincerely apologise if we have used any images inadvertently, without appropriate credits or permissions. If so, please advise us so we can rectify the situation.
