SOME OTHER STORIES...
Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst MacFarlane Park
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch and make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary... and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
Mary Duff has lived in Shirley for 42 years, and was chosen by Kidsfirst MacFarlane Park as their special person to ride in the vintage car as a thank you for everything she does in their community.
Mary is a parent, grandparent and great-grandparent of children who have attended the kindergarten.
She also runs ‘Knitter Natter’, a group which knits all sorts of different items for children of the kindergarten and premature babies born at Burwood Hospital. Mary and her group produce blankets, scarves, beanies, booties, cardigans, jumpers, little socks, mittens and bonnets.
When Mary arrived in a 1928 Dodge, the children welcomed her with handmade flags and gave her presents (because they had been learning about appreciating people and being kind), and invited her to stay with them for a homemade lunch of freshly baked bread, with ham, tomatoes and some lettuce from the kindergarten garden.
Because of Mary’s popularity in Shirley, the whole Community Centre came out to watch her ride in style, and turned Vintage Car Day into a celebration for all ages.
Mary said, “it was a beautiful car to drive in.” and that her favourite part of "a brilliant day" was “the children - oh absolutely the children."
