SOME OTHER STORIES...
Kindy chart topper
A CD of two kindy favourites and an original song - "Take it Easy" - is a great example of people working together in a true kindy community project. Kidsfirst Mt Pleasant enlisted the help of musicians Rory and Rueben, Teacher Ruth Browne illustrated the cover, and the sleeve was printed by a parent who works for Verve printers.
The resulting CD is being sold as a fundraiser to buy music resources for the kindy group, which has been hit hard by the earthquakes, losing its original site.
Here’s a taste of ‘Take it Easy’, with some lyrics and how they came about from listening to the children about what they missed about their old kindy, and their experiences over the past two years.
We’re tickling the clouds making them giggle out loud
This line came about when children were taking photos of looking up and looking down at our new Kidsfirst site.
We’re patting Papatūānuku there, there, take it easy, take it easy “Aftershocks are like really, bad dreams, but they are really, really real! And true.”
We’re planting the seeds for the future trees…
After teachers rescued the small but strong Totora tree from the old kindergarten site, a discussion followed the re-planting “When I am an adult I am going to plant seeds for future trees all around my house, and it will be way after I am a teenager."
We’re chasing Mother Nature as she glides on by…
This line came about in-depth conversations about life and nature.
We’re laughing out loud – we’re smiling inside -
We’re growing up strong, we know we all belong…..
The children’s strength and resilience following the upheaval after the earthquakes.
As well as being captured on CD, the children now sing the song to remember, and also look ahead to the future – with ‘growing up strong’ being the vital words, and the underlying message of the song.
When it came to writing the children’s words down, Angie says the team was greatly influenced an article ‘Can you Hear Me’, by Gerison Lansdown, recommended by Education Service Manager Colleen.
“It takes a look at the rights of young children to participate in decisions affecting them. This research would be of interest to both parents and teachers,” she says.
With the first run of CDs sold out, and another lot on the way, what next for the budding recording artists? The team is looking to compose a song with the lyrics and the tune coming from the children.
“It could be an interesting project!” Angie says.

Kidsfirst Mt Pleasant is looking to top the music charts after releasing a CD with two kindy favourites and one original song.
The CD was a collaborative effort from community musicians, teachers and parent help.
