Kidsfirst Kindergartens Karoro was founded in 1982 at the end of a quiet cul de sac, looking out to the Tasman sea, and nestled below beautiful native bush. Our place is away from busy traffic, a hidden gem where we can hear the native birds in the bush, the waves from the ocean, and see Aoraki on a clear day (from the top of the monkey-bars!).

Indoors, inspired by a Reggio Emilia philosophy, children aged 2-5 years can access a range of resources  to ignite thinking and exploration. Learning occurs in all spaces at the child’s pace, acknowledging the mana, wairua and mauri our tamariki bring when they come to us. Tamariki are encouraged to be mindful of and inspired by the world around them, and respectful of the environment they play and learn in.

Our vast outdoor area is abundant with native plants, climbing trees and our treasured vegetable gardens complete with composting and worms farms. The playground offers children the freedom to explore and engage with the natural world outside, in all weather.

At Karoro Kindergarten we are very proud to be a Silver Enviroschool, an award which recognises the powerful way in which children can positively influence and change their environment towards a more sustainable future. Our place-based programme explores how to engage in sustainable practices and nurture our precious environment. At Kidsfirst Karoro children are inspired to develop their imaginative thinking and problem-solving skills through real-life experiences such as growing vegetables, preparing healthy food, caring for our resident Hei Hei (chickens) Bonny and Charlie, and engaging in waste minimisation through re-cycling and up-cycling, such as feeding the worm farm our left over food waste.

We are lucky to have access to the West Coast bush right at our door step, which we explore through small-group bush walks. By connecting with nature through sustainable practices, children at Karoro Kindergarten are competent and capable guardians/kaitiaki of our unique place in Aotearoa New Zealand and ultimately the wider world.

You're always welcome here! At Kidsfirst Kindergartens Karoro,  community and connectedness are at the heart of what we do. We have strong links with our local primary schools, which supports the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from Kindergarten.

We would recommend that you enrol initially for at least two full days –building up to five days at your child's pace. This gives us, the teachers, time to get to know your child and provides consistency around supporting their learning.

Nau mai, tauti mai - come in any time, we are very proud of our unique learning environment and would love to show you around.  Kidsfirst Kindergartens Karoro is a wonderful place to learn!
