Bringing the young and old together is a great idea for everyone involved. Grandparents' Days have always been a feature at our kindergartens, but Kidsfirst Kaiapoi North have taken it a step further with the residents at their nearby Kaiapoi Lodge.
SOME OF OUR STORIES.
Each Tuesday afternoon, Kidsfirst Kaiapoi North welcomes the regulars from Kaiapoi Lodge into their kindy. As the young and old sit side by side, they do things like play games together, paint for each other, and sing to each other. The kindergarten children have even come up with a special name for their guests, affectionately calling them ‘The Olderly’.
They meet at the same time each week, which suits both the Lodge residents and the Kidsfirst children and means that the same people are present for each visit, allowing them both to form deeper, more meaningful relationships.
Raewyn, who facilitates from the Kaiapoi Lodge end, often tells the teachers at Kidsfirst Kaiapoi North how enthusiastic her group are, and how they look forward to sharing time with the children.
Head Teacher Jill Chatterton says that “it is empowering the children to be responsible, respectful and reflective”, as they see and learn “what it really means to be old”.
Speaking about the preschoolers, Jill says, “it is heart warming to see them listening and understanding with empathy. They are learning the respect and gentleness we need to share, the capabilities of the elderly and how we can help them in their journey.”
