SOME OTHER STORIES...
The power of a song...
These are just a few of the creative lyrics you might hear being sung at Kidsfirst South Brighton. Head Teacher Heather Pearce wrote ‘The Earthquake Song’ to the tune of ‘Jingle Jangle Scarecrow’, to help the children make sense of what was happening in their community and develop their own working theories, while showing change can have positives.
In fact, the kindy has had an extensive learning programme based on this theme, where the major upheaval and change in the surrounding community has been turned into fun, encouraging learning experiences.
The children showed great interest in the roadworks outside the kindy gates for months on end, reflected in their play with elaborate rebuilds in blocks, and trenches heartily dug in the sandpit.
SCIRT (Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team) paid a visit to talk about their work and safety issues around roadworks, and with the help of road cones they donated, the children made their own road network within the grounds – kitted out in high-vis vests of course.

Earthquakes and upheaval has turned into learning opportunities.
A song is just one of the many ways the teachers are turning disruption into a positive for the children.
