OUR TOP STORIES
| Outside is the place to be over the long, hot days of summer. And there's no better place than a Kidsfirst backyard where bare feet meet mud puddles...
With a kindergarten year that begins in the summer months, it's a great time for lots of fun, outdoor activities. To embrace the start of the new year and to help new children and families feel welcome, Kidsfirst Hei Hei had a focus on getting outdoors to make connections, share experiences and encourage a sense of belonging (whanaungatanga).
Nothing says summertime like a tent pitched on the lawn. The kiwi camping holiday experience was brought to life at kindergarten when the teaching team bought a new tent to pitch in the backyard. Flick the zip and dive on in to chat and giggle, or curl up with a good book.
“...And we have an amazing outdoor telephone for children to connect with one another and revisit day to day events and conversations,” Teacher, Niki Maritz adds.
Step inside and it's a good time to get together over a strum on the ukulele or a thwack on the drums...join me for a swing and sway in a colourful samoan ula (necklace)?
“Children responded well to new dress-ups that reflect the cultures of our community and have really enjoyed making music together and exploring the various sounds that they can make,” says Niki.
"Together around the table, children enjoyed a kai treat of Fish'n'Chips, while our Whānau days on Thursdays also help to promote a sense of whanaungatanga (belonging) at our kindergarten."
Inside and out - it's fantastic to see all the new friendships and fun connections happening at Kidsfirst Hei Hei.
