Kidsfirst Cromwell children can look forward to a brand new bright, red fire station playhouse set to arrive at their kindergarten very soon.

It’s with thanks to four creative Year 11 Cromwell College material technology students. They designed and built the playhouse as part of a national competition ‘Build-Ability’ run through BCITO.

“The thing that’s really special,” explains Kidsfirst Cromwell Head Teacher Wendy Scully, “is that three of these wonderful young people went to our kindergarten - and I taught them!”

Back then Regan Hucklebridge spent hours at the kindergarten carpentry table while Matthew Anderson was a keen playground fireman. And a gifted artist from day dot - Alicia de Joux has now put her talents to use on the fire station themed artwork decorating the walls of the playhouse.

“We feel so privileged that this talented group have chosen us to gift the fire station to, what a fantastic example of giving back to the community they’ve grown up in,” says Wendy.

Kidsfirst Cromwell tamariki will delight in a firehouse built to safety specifications but with fun in mind. It includes a climbing wall, ladder, pole, chalk board and a fire station bell to ring (donated by Matthew’s Grandad).

With a budget of $500 and the support of many local hardware businesses, the team of four students did an outstanding job - from careful planning and design, to showing an impressive level of skill throughout the building process.

The group’s hard work has paid off – they can be proud of a fire station that looks very professional and is a job well done.

“Once we have completed a planned playground revamp at our kindergarten we’ll find the playhouse a very special spot – in fact it will have pride of place,” adds Wendy.

The student’s are thrilled to see the fire station going to Kidsfirst Cromwell, somewhere they know it will be well used and loved.
