Our Education Service Manager, or ESM, is an important member of our teaching team.  Based at Kidsfirst Head Office, she is on site regularly to observe our programme, give us feedback and professional support, and encourage us toward continuous educational improvement. Please feel free to talk with her about your child’s kindergarten/centre experience..

Our ESM is Mary Wood

Our community established this kindergarten in 1928 in the local church hall. We moved into our purpose-built kindergarten on the current site in 1936. We have developed long-standing links with the community – local primary schools, Plunket, health nurses, and social and family support agencies. Many families have had several generations attend Kidsfirst Linwood.

Our Session Times

Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.
These terms echo the terms your child will have when they start school.

You can read more here about what's been happening in our archive of stories about Kidsfirst Kindergartens, the fun we have, the processes and learning outcomes that result, and why we're such a great start for your child.

Our Vision Statement

Whanaungatanga is a cornerstone of Kidsfirst Kindergartens Linwood. An atmosphere of open communication and respect between kaiako (teachers), children, parents/whānau and visitors promotes this. We foster ūkaipōtanga (belonging) through a welcoming, friendly and supportive environment where children and parents/whānau know they have a place.

There is an emphasis on social competence with language being a key strategy. We also place great importance on physically active play as a foundation for learning. Teachers and tamariki proudly appreciate and celebrate the diverse nature of the Linwood community and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Te Ao Māori (a Māori world view) inspires kaiako and tamariki to weave Te Reo me te Tikanga throughout the curriculum.

Tamariki and kaiako are actively involved in rich learning experiences both in the kindergarten environment and wider community.

Our Programme

Our programme is based on a philosophy of free play; depending on the weather our children are able to choose from a variety of exciting experiences both inside and out. Catering for a wide age range, we provide a strong core curriculum for the younger children and opportunities for the older children to extend and challenge themselves.

At times we all gather together to develop relationships and enhance social communication. Key times for this are Circle/Mat times and Kai times (morning tea and lunch).

Our Excursions

Kaiako are committed to trips out of the kindergarten for whānau and children at Kidsfirst Linwood. Excursions help children to make sense of and find out about their world. Trips support children to develop:

  • Knowledge about features of the area
  • A perception of themselves as “explorers”
  • Working theories about the living world
  • Interest and pleasure in discovering an unfamiliar wider world
  • Confidence in using a variety of strategies for exploring and making sense of the world

Most of all, trips are fun, especially when shared with friends and family.

All of the children will be part of the educational programmes in the kindergarten that support each trip.

Our Environment

We enjoy large open spaces, both inside and out where there is plenty of room to kick balls, climb on boxes, swinging and using our purpose-built scooter track.

We have an open-door policy and warmly welcome visitors and whānau to spend time during sessions with us anytime, discovering what we can offer you and your family. Feel free to bring kai and join us for a cup of tea/coffee.
