Our Education Service Manager, or ESM, is an important member of our teaching team.  Based at Kidsfirst Head Office, she is on site regularly to observe our programme, give us feedback and professional support, and encourage us toward continuous educational improvement. Please feel free to talk with her about your child’s kindergarten/centre experience..

Our ESM is Lorraine Stewart

Our Session Times

Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.
These terms echo the terms your child will have when they start school.

You can read more here about what's been happening in our archive of stories about Kidsfirst Kindergartens, the fun we have, the processes and learning outcomes that result and why we're such a great start for your child.

Our Routines

Our days follow a regular routine, with time set aside for a number of activities including sharing time, choosing time, mat time, morning tea, lunch and tidy up time.

Mat/Group Time

Mat times are an important part of the kindergarten session where we share stories and sing songs. This helps children to develop their concentration skills and learn to express themselves in a large group. The morning children are encouraged to share items of interest and topical news at this time.

Kai Time

Children bring their own lunchbox and drink bottle each day.

At Kidsfirst Hornby, we care about the environment and teaching tamariki to care for it, too.  We are a rubbish-free kindergarten, so please consider providing food in small containers. Any rubbish is sent home in lunchboxes – thank you in advance for helping us to do the right thing.

Tidy-Up Time

This part of our day is where we encourage children to help put equipment away and generally tidy up. We appreciate any assistance from parents during this time.

We are able to utilise egg shells, bottle tops, magazines, material, cardboard, paper, cardboard boxes, ice-cream containers and wool. We do not accept toilet rolls and medicine containers. Natural materials are always in demand, e.g. shells or driftwood, so please keep this in mind on your trips to the beach.

There is no designated parking area outside of the kindergarten. We have a seating area in the front garden of the kindergarten, which you are welcome to use at any time as a safe area to converse with other parents.

Parent Library

We have a collection of books, videos and pamphlets on parenting issues as well as children’s growth and development. These are located to the left of the kitchen. Please notify one of the teachers when you take a book home. There are also many other items of interest, which you are welcome to use.

Lost Property

Lost property is located in the box inside the front entrance.

We celebrate your child’s 5th birthday at the farewell mat time with a special card and a dough cake, which s/he helps to make at kindergarten. We ask that you please do not send sweets/treats along at this time as we encourage healthy eating.

Nut Free Zone

Don’t forget that our kindergartens are nut free zones, so please check that all items do not contain any traces of peanuts/nuts.

Parent Information

If your child’s name is highlighted on the sign in/out sheet, could you please talk to one of the teachers when you collect your child as this is an indication that a teacher wishes to speak with you.

What Food To Bring

Children are required to bring a named lunch box with healthy snacks for their morning tea and lunch. Drinks are not required as they are provided. Please make us aware of any special dietary requirements and allergies. Unsuitable food items will be returned to your child to take home at the end of their session - if you have any questions about the suitability of an item please see a teacher.

We suggest that a healthy snack may include the following:

  • Sandwich and a piece of fruit
  • Biscuit/cracker/fruit
  • Cheese slice and a piece of fruit
  • A muffin and a piece of fruit
  • Dried fruit and cheese

However, the following are not allowed:

  • Muesli bars/chocolate biscuits/cakes
  • Chocolate/sweets/yoghurt
  • Chips/popcorn

Our kindergarten is currently undergoing exciting refurbishments but we'll be open again for Term 1 2018. In the meantime, please contact us if you'd like to enrol your child, or find out more information.
