Our Hours Are...
We are able to talk to parents and caregivers most of the time, so please make an appointment if you'd like to do this. EMAIL US HERE
Our Session Times
Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.
Although our morning session as listed above is for 4 hours, if you would like your child to attend for a little longer than this but not the six hours, please talk to us about this as I am sure we will be able to help.
You are welcome to come along with your toddler or pre-school child and have fun together exploring and trying out some of the activities that we offer during our kindergarten session. No charge. Please bring a snack for your child's morning tea.
You can read more here about what's been happening in our archive of stories about Kidsfirst Kindergartens, the fun we have, the processes and learning outcomes that result and why we're such a great start for your child.
The teachers also have professional time, which we use for team meetings, planning and assessment work, administration and various other duties, professional development meetings with other Kidsfirst teachers and work with parents.
Family Involvement and Special Events
Families are always welcome at Hillmorton. For your child's sake please become involved as much as you are able to in kindergarten life. You are welcome to stay during the sessions to be involved with your child's learning - babies and toddlers are welcome too. Family Luncheons, Grandparent's Day and other social events for our kindergarten families are held regularly during the year.
Families at Hillmorton
Kia Ora, welcome, we are glad that you are joining our kindergarten community - our families are really important to us here at Hillmorton. We hope that you will soon come to feel part of our kindergarten family and we look forward to welcome you and your child to our kindergarten sessions.
As part of our transition to kindergarten we will invite you to come in for a pre-visit. During this pre-visit you will see the session your child will attend, meet the teachers and your child will be able to try out the different activities while you get to know our kindergarten.
On your child's first day of kindergarten, a teacher will be available to welcome you to the session, show your child his/her locker and where to put their things. We ask that you be prepared to stay for a while on this first day with your child so that you may both share in exploring the kindergarten.
What Food To Bring
We help our children to learn about healthy eating at our kindergarten. You child will need to bring a healthy snack for morning tea - milk or water will be provided. If your child stays for lunch then please provide them with a healthy lunch as well.
For helpful suggestions and more information about our food routines and procedures, please see our "First Day Information for New Families" pamphlet or just talk to one of the teachers.
Please advise the teachers if your child has any food allergies or special dietary requirements.
Our sessions follow a regular routine and are planned to include a variety of learning activities in both our indoor and outdoor learning environments. Detailed below are examples of the key focus times. For more information about the daily routine, please see our notice board.
On the wall in the collage area is an extensive list of materials we collect such as magazines, film canisters, fabric and milk bottle tops. We accept most things except toilet rolls and medicine containers. Natural materials are always in demand, e.g. shells or driftwood, so please keep this in mind on your trips to the beach.
For the safety of our children, we ask that parents and caregivers do not park in the kindergarten driveway or over the entrance way. Please park with consideration for our neighbours on Torrens Road.
Children's Lending Library
We have "Library Day" for the children on a Thursday at the end of our morning session. Children are able to bring a library book home in a special bag to share with you.
We have a parent library (near the main entrance) and books on various topics are available for you to borrow. Please record any items that you borrow in the notebook. In the parent library you will also find our Management Plan, Policies and Statements of Practice, which are available for you to read at your leisure.
Should your child lose or leave anything at kindergarten the lost property basket is located near the main entrance, under the "sign in" shelf, or please just ask one of the teachers.
Mat times are an important part of our kindergarten session when all the children come together usually for story time, rhymes and songs or other shared activities. You are welcome to sit on the mat to support your child and join in if you would like to. We have a special whānau time each morning at about 9.00am when we come together to welcome the children as we start our day. We end both our morning and all day sessions with a short group time as well.
This part of our day is where we encourage children, as part of their learning, to help put toys and equipment away, wipe tables and generally tidy up. We appreciate any assistance from parents at this time.
