Our Session Times

Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.
These terms echo the terms your child will have when they start school.

You can read more here about what's been happening in our archive of stories about Kidsfirst Kindergartens, the fun we have, the processes and learning outcomes that result and why we're such a great start for your child.

Our Routines

Our days follow a regular routine, with time set aside for a number of activities. Detailed below are examples of the key focus times. For more information about the daily routine and kindergarten policies, please see our notice board.

Mat/Group Time

Mat times are an important part of the kindergarten session where we share stories and sing songs. This helps children to develop their concentration skills and learn to express themselves in a large group.

Kai Time

Teachers sit with children to encourage healthy eating and conversation, and will support children as they open containers and eat.

Tidy-Up Time

This part of our day is where we encourage children to help put equipment away, wipe tables and generally tidy up. We appreciate any assistance from parents – please let us know if you would like to help.

We collect magazines, film canisters, fabric and milk bottle tops. We accept anything except toilet rolls and medicine containers. Natural materials are always in demand, e.g. shells or driftwood, so please keep this in mind on your trips to the beach.

Caring For The Environment

We educate the children and their families/whānau about the environment, our responsibility and place in it. We have a vegetable garden, a wormery and compost, and actively reduce, reuse and recycle.

Parking can be difficult because we are situated in a private lane and are allowed to use this at the goodwill of the neighbours. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE AND DO NOT PARK OVER DRIVEWAYS OR IN THE TURNING BAY.

We do not have washing facilities at kindergarten, rather we are assisted by parents who collect the washing when required.

Our Pets

We have two birds called Sparkle and Darkle We currently have a pet guinea pig named Fluffy-Scruffy. We have a roster for taking the pets home on the weekend, and for holidays (see main entrance for details).

Parent Library

We have a collection of books, videos and pamphlets on parenting issues as well as children’s growth and development. These are located by the side entrance. Please record any items that you borrow in the notebook. There are also many other items of interest, which you are welcome to use.

Lost Property

A lost property box is located on the table outside the front entrance.

We celebrate your child’s 5th birthday at the farewell mat time with a special card and a dough cake, which s/he helps to make at kindergarten. Parents are welcome to provide a treat (but NO SWEETS for the children) or a small gift for the kindergarten.

What Food To Bring

Children are required to bring a named lunch box with healthy snacks for their morning tea and lunch (if required) - water is provided. Please make us aware of any special dietary requirements and allergies. Remember that your child may be at kindergarten for 6 hours and he/she will require sufficient food for this time.

Nut Free Zone

Don’t forget that our kindergartens are nut free zones, so please check that all items do not contain any traces of peanuts/nuts.

We suggest that a healthy snack may include the following:

  • Sandwich and a piece of fruit
  • Biscuit/cracker/fruit
  • Cheese slice and a piece of fruit
  • A muffin and a piece of fruit
  • Dried fruit and cheese
