The word ‘Niu’ refers to the coconut tree, and the coconut itself is often referred to as the ‘tree of life’.

Kidsfirst Niu Early Learning Centre places a strong emphasis on maintaining our Tongan identity, language and culture and values here in Christchurch, under the guidance, support and ownership of our umbrella organisation of Kidsfirst Kindergartens.

We believe in celebrating and honouring other Pasifika nations and value and nurture the diverse cultures within our service. Kidsfirst Niu ELC honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi through tikanga practices and the use of Te Reo.

The curriculum offered to the children is based on Te Whariki (1996) Early Childhood Curriculum and the Pasifika Education Plan 2013-2017. We believe in providing a safe and supportive learning environment, with high quality care and an educational programme that nurtures and respects each child’s well-being, sense of belonging, interests, strengths and capabilities.

Our service will provide the children with opportunities to have fun, while learning the necessary skills which will empower, develop confidence and encourage the children to become lifelong learners.

The teaching team believe in using the “talanoa” approach to communicate effectively and building positive partnerships with our kainga, famili and the community. The teaching team will maintain a high level of professionalism within the service, and work in unity and model our cultural values in a respectful and responsive way.
