Your child can come to our kindergarten for up to 6 hours a day, Monday to Friday, during our 4 kindergarten terms.

You’ll find our kindergarten next to Hawea Flat School, in the heart of the community hub – with the Playgroup, Church, community hall and bike park close by. We’re so lucky to have panoramic mountain views and a natural, changing landscape to inspire our children’s imagination and learning every day! By connecting with nature through sustainable practices, children at Hawea Kindergarten are competent and capable guardians/kaitiaki of our unique place in Aotearoa New Zealand, and ultimately the wider world.
The skilled and experienced teaching team at Hawea encourage Tamariki to have a voice in the way the programme operates – because children know their thinking is valued, and they know and trust this is a place of learning where their interests, skills and abilities will be acknowledged and supported in ongoing learning experiences. Children feel they belong to a place where play is valued as “real work”.
Indoors, Kidsfirst Kindergartens Karoro has a homelike feel. Children aged 2-5 years can access a range of resources that are carefully and intentionally presented to ignite thinking and exploration. Learning occurs in all spaces at the child’s pace, acknowledging the mana, wairua and mauri our tamariki bring when they come to us. Tamariki are encouraged to be mindful of and inspired by the world around them, and respectful of the environment they play and learn in.
Our vast outdoor area is abundant with native plants, climbing trees and our treasured vegetable gardens complete with composting and worms farms. The playground offers children the freedom to explore and engage with the natural world outside, in all weather. This nurtures each child’s ability to begin to understand the complexity and wonder of the world they live in, and enhance their connections with nature.
At Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hawea we have a collaborative learning community, where whānau/ families are viewed as significant partners, and included along our early learning journey. We have an ‘open door’, approach, and whānau are welcome to stay at any time - community and connectedness is important here. It’s at the heart of what we do. We have strong links with our local primary schools, which supports the transition to school for you and your child, as he/she moves on from Kindergarten.
Hawea Kindergarten operates for six hours each day, from 9.00am – 3.00pm. This works really well if you have older children going to school as you can do the drop offs and pick-ups at the same time. We would recommend that you enrol for at least two full days –building up to five days. This gives us, the teachers time to get to know your child and provides consistency around supporting their learning.
Come in any time, we are very proud of our unique learning environment and would love to show you around. Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hawea is a wonderful place to learn!
There's always a lot happening in our area. Kidsfirst Kindergartens are so much a part of our local communities. Here's an idea of some of the things that our other kindergartens in the region are doing.
