Kidsfirst Kindergartens Hokitika won the Engaged Award 2015, for the Kidsfirst At Our Hearts Awards celebrated at the AGM in May.

The judges said that this kindergarten has a highly effective programme. It has a wonderful bicultural focus which they’ve documented over the past five years. The kindergarten children are hugely involved with the community including many visits to the local primary school to work alongside the school children.

Kidsfirst Hokitika has been a part of numerous community activities. The children have participated in pet day at the nearby school, have built a home for a penguin at the annual driftwood and sand event, designed art for the junk to funk exhibition and visited the elderly. They have celebrated Puake, the local version of Matariki, by holding a whānau hangi at the Arahura Marae.

Kidsfirst Hokitika children have had life education with Harold the giraffe, kept the local environment clean by collecting rubbish off the beach and around the streets as well as keeping up the rhythm and beat with the Christchurch City Orchestra. They've ended their year with a fun float specifically designed for the Christmas parade.

This kindergarten is truly engaged with the local people, places, opportunites, ideas and our heritage.

For Kidsfirst Hokitika, the 2015 Engaged Award recognised a whole community’s worth of effort.

Head Teacher Ceridwyn Dimmick says, “We are a kindergarten that has been built by the local community. The people of our community both provide for and support our work. For us, being enagaged means giving back to our community through support and participating in community events like Children’s Day and Junk 2 Funk.”

Congratulations to the Engaged team at Kidsfirst Hokitika.
