The boys in red and black measure up to kindy
Two Crusaders received a colourful reception from Kidsfirst Beryl McCombs when they popped into the Redcliffs kindergarten for an afternoon visit.
The rugby pair, Tom Donnelly and Willi Heinz, were met by red and black painted faces as the children welcomed them to kindy.
There was a chance to throw around a rugby ball, take down Willi with a few tackles and some flag swinging lessons.
But it wasn’t all physical excitement.
True to the 100% qualified teaching team that Kidsfirst represents, Head Teacher Elizabeth Davey said the visit was as much a learning experience for the children, as it was a fun-filled visit.
“For the children who knew about the Crusaders and rugby, the boys’ visit meant the children had to research and think about questions they might want to ask and they planned them out the day before.
“And for the children who weren’t so familiar, they not only learnt a lot about rugby but they also developed some valuable coping skills to do with handling changes and surprises to routine, which sometimes happens here at kindy.”
Amongst the questions and activity there was some scientific inquiry as well.
“The children have been mapping their heights regularly so the children asked if they could measure Tom and Willi. The children were stunned to find that Tom Donnelly is 2m tall and our very own, Mimi is almost half as tall as him!”
