| Alongside Matariki and in celebration of their wonderful kindergarten, Kidsfirst Woolley Street welcomed friends, family and neighbours to join them for a Community Open Day.
“Matariki celebrations are a great way to include whānau and our extended community and we had a lovely range of people visit,” says Head Teacher, Jolene Hemmingsen.
Throughout the day there was a steady stream of visitors that popped past the kindergarten gate. Grandparents, aunties and cousins came along as tamariki’s special friends, and were given the guided tour or taken off to see a favourite corner of the kindy.
“We were very proud, our children used such beautiful manners – saying to our visitors on arrival... ‘Welcome to our kindergarten,’ and... ‘Can I offer you a tea or coffee.”
While some stayed for a shared morning tea (the tamariki had baked a special Matariki cake), others visited towards the tail end of session to be a part of ‘whānau time.’
“We also welcomed a local family and an elderly neighbour, which added to the wonderful community spirit,” adds Jolene. “It was great to showcase our fantastic kindergarten and all of the wonderful things we have on offer.”
“Our open day was quite easy to organise and in fact it was so well received – we think we’ll do it again next term.”
