SOME OF OUR TOP STORIES

A recent walk to the local rugby park and playground had left this group of environmentally conscientious Kidsfirst Hoon Hay tamariki disappointed.
“We noticed a lot of rubbish littering the footpath and grass verges,” says Head Teacher, Zdenka Reading.
“And the playground was not very pleasant either, with empty plastic bottles, candy wrappers and other rubbish.”
During some korero (talking) back at kindergarten the children had an idea - “we could help make our local street and the park look beautiful again by helping to pick up some rubbish.”
Armed with empty plastic bags, protective gloves and a lot of enthusiasm they went on a litter-collection mission.
The children embraced the activity and soon they turned it into a game – who can collect more rubbish?
Some of the bags got very full very fast.
“People walking on the footpath responded with praise and admiration for our young kaitiaki (guardians),” says Zdenka.
On return to kindergarten the children sorted the plastic and paper rubbish into the rubbish or recycling bins.
Mission completed.
