Buddying up for learning and development

Each Tuesday at Kidsfirst Avonhead, very special bonds are made. It’s this day of the week when the kindergarten’s buddy system with Avonhead School comes into play, and an ‘inquiry learning’ class of eight and nine-year-olds team up with a pre-schooler for reading and learning time together.

One week the kindy group will go to school, the following week the school will come to kindergarten, with the end-of-year seeing a shared concert and party which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Kidsfirst Avonhead Teacher Lorraine Stewart says the initiative has been great for the kindy children’s confidence and developing their interaction with other people.

“Avonhead Teacher Kate Morgan, who came up with the idea, has told us about some of their children really coming out of their shells, and increasing their reading ability through reading to our children.

“The inquiry learning and encouraging the older children to ask lots of questions sits well alongside the kindergarten philosophy of learning through discovery and a child's interest. We’re really looking forward to continuing it this year.”
