| Working together, resourcefully, to create something beautiful in nature - from what nature has to offer - is just the kind of thing that makes Kidsfirst Kindergartens so unique.
At Kidsfirst Belfast, nestled in the garden, there’s a little flax whare that looks right at home amongst the native trees.
It’s thanks to kindergarten father Greg. On one of their weekly nature trips to the Styx Mill Reserve last year, he had shown the children how to made a whare out of harakeke (flax).
To the children’s delight it had inspired Greg, a builder, to later design and create another whare back at the kindergarten.
He had collected the harakeke and korari (flower stalk) locally and worked with the children to make their fantastic little garden whare. It took many hours of patient work, with the children joining in where possible.
At that time Greg’s daughter Charlotte was at Kidsfirst Belfast kindergarten. She and the other children had enjoyed having a whare of their very own to play in everyday.
“Charlotte is now at school but today when we made our weekly visit to Styx Mill we found another little whare in the same space as our original one with a note attached," says Head Teacher, Justine Martin-McKenzie.
It read - 'To Kidsfirst - From Charlotte'
"Charlotte and her dad had made another flax whare for us in the Styx Mill Reserve!”
How very thoughtful and what a wonderful surprise for all of the kindergarten children.
