Vintage Car Day, November 2013
at Kidsfirst Beckenham
The 13th of November, 2013 saw a fleet of vintage cars traverse Christchurch and make their way to every Kidsfirst kindy in the Canterbury region.
The occasion was to acknowledge and celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst, and proved to be a huge success. Each car was driven by a passionate Vintage Car Club car owner who volunteered their time and vehicle to help Kidsfirst celebrate the centenary...and each car carried a “special guest” to their destination, someone who the kindy wanted to honour and thank.
The cars really helped children to see what life was like in the 'olden days'. In amongst the excitement of the teachers, the children and their guests, photos were taken, seats were climbed, and, as always, horns were tooted!
It was a great way to remember how far Kidsfirst has come, and to look towards a bright and exciting future together.
Kidsfirst Beckenham's special guest was Karolin Potter, the Deputy Chairperson of the Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board.
Karolin says she was reminded of so many fond memories when she visited the kindergarten as its special Centenary guest.
When the vintage car turned up with Karolin to Kidsfirst Beckenham, the surprise was that there was already a wonderful old car up the driveway! Head teacher, Jill Peters had brought her 1934 Ford Y to work for the day.
The children loved the theme day that their teachers had organised for the centenary celebrations. Everyone involved put in a tremendous effort in getting dressed up in 1920s clothing. Together with Karolin, they played games from years gone by, including hoops and skittles, and enjoyed an Edwardian picnic. Children were allowed to clamber in and around the cars, and absolutely loved seeing how things used to be. What an awesome day and a fantastic way to celebrate 100 Years of Kidsfirst!
Here are some photos from that special day
