More than half a century strong.
Beckenham Kindergarten was opened on the 12th of March 1955 by Mabel Howard, New Zealand's first female MP and local families and kindergarten staff from the Beckenham area.
50 years later, the kindy celebrated its birthday by welcoming back past pupils and staff along with the present kindergarten community.
The photo below shows Simon Greening-Christian who was a past Beckenham kindy kid, and his son Otie (on the right) who was attending Beckenham at the time of the celebration. They were honoured to cut the anniversary cake and Otie helped plant the commemorative tree for the occasion.
Since then Beckenham was one of the kindergartens featured when
we did a photoshoot for our Kidsfirst promotional material in 2009.
Our website uses material from the Canterbury Westland Kindergarten Association's own archives, Kindergarten Chronicles and other CWFKA publications, and those sourced from the kindys themselves. Unless otherwise noted, we believe all photographs are those of the kindergarten association and sincerely apologise if we have used any images inadvertently, without appropriate credits or permissions. If so, please advise us so we can rectify the situation.
